Effects of Alcoholism in the Body

The prolonged abuse of alcohol affects the human body causing in some cases permanent damage to the body.   The long-term or even permanent effects of alcoholism are more dangerous and difficult if not impossible to recover from.  Alcoholism can lead to a number of consequences and diseases:

Hypoglycemia
Kidney disease
Metabolic damage to every cell
Nutritional diseases
Intoxification
Cerebellar degeneration
Cerebral atrophy
Increased cancer of mouth, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus
Chronic gastritis
Pancreatitis
Cardiomyopathy
Cancer of the upper intestinal tract
Liver fatty degeneration and cirrhosis
Arrhythmias
Hypertension
Hypoglycaemia
Osteoporosis
Coagulation disorders
Impotence
Infertility in both men and women
Damage to the fetus – permanent birth defects babies born to alcoholic mothers
Angina
Oesophagitis, gastritis, ulcers

The heart is particularly vulnerable to alcohol’s damaging effects. Often alcoholics have higher levels of blood pressure than the average, and face an increased rate of heart disease. Another common side-effect is the reduced flow of blood to the arms and legs.  Heavy prolonged drinking can also lead to strokes and brain damage.

In general, heavy drinkers have impaired liver function.  It is one of the organs that is most damaged from the long-term abuse of alcohol.  It is the biggest organ located inside the human body, and drinking can cause cirrhosis to occur. At least 1 in 5 develops cirrhosis.   Early signs of cirrhosis of the liver may include nausea, swelling of the ankles, pain in the abdomen and fatigue.

Chronic alcoholism is the second leading cause of brain damage.  It causes the human brain to literally shrink over time.  This causes brain cells to die affecting memory, sight, smell, hearing, hormones, and the nervous system.

Pregnant women should be aware of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. An alcoholic pregnant woman is exposing the fetus to the harmful effects of the substance. The fetus may suffer from the inability to successfully receive oxygen and nutrition. In addition, the child may be born with several different deformities due to the alcohol consumption, such as malformations of the face, organ deformities, or mental retardation.

In alcoholics, the intestinal microflora is acutely deranged.  Growth of toxin producing bacteria in the small intestine may lead to poor absorption of fats, carbohydrates, protein, folic acid and vitamin B12.  Also, alcohol consumption raises intestinal permeability to toxins and partially digested foods, thus allowing intensified toxic and food allergy effects.

As alcoholism is a debilitating disease, the sooner a treatment can be started, the better.  Drinking in moderation may not result in all of the problems listed above, but if you have a problem with drinking, you should address it as soon as you possible in order to limit the damage that is done to your body.

It is still unknown what causes alcoholism, a disease that usually gets too little attention too late.
