The cause of alcoholism is unknown. It seems to be a multifactorial condition with genetic, psychological, physiological,
environmental and social factors that differ from person to person. However, genetic factors are considered critical. Few studies
have shown that the incidence of alcoholism on any given person is four to five times more common if a biological parent is
alcoholic.
Many individuals are afraid not only with losing control over their use of alcohol and drugs, but over food, smoking, gambling
and shopping. So what is the nature of addiction and how can we explain its control over certain people?
Alcoholics trade away family, career and social life rather than quit drinking.
So what is the nature of addiction? One hypothesis refers to the abnormal low levels of endorphins, a
neurochemical occurring naturally in the body. These endorphins affect mood and behaviour and when the levels of these neurochemicals are
abnormal, an alcoholic for example may try to counterbalance by drinking alcohol that produces the same or a far more intense feeling. The
first efforts to medicate themselves with alcohol usually lies within their control. Gradually however, they lose control and the option
becomes an irresistible impulse.
Is alcoholism a disease? Some experts believe that every addictive individual is searching for
wholeness and inner peace, and compulsive behaviour is yet another foolish attempt to fill an internal emptiness. If this is the case,
any attempt to control an addiction must go together with a search of what has created this feeling of emptiness in the first place. Many
experts feel that most alcoholics have one common aspect, a feeling of insecurity or incompleteness, no matter how successful their
lives appear to others.
However Alcoholics Anonymous, argue that alcohol itself creates the need and they consider alcoholism to be a disease.
The idea that the individual is powerless over his or her drinking.
Once alcohol dependency develops, it becomes very difficult to abstain without outside help. Absolute avoidance is
important, a goal attained through the group support of people with the same condition, along with acknowledgment of self-destructive
behavior patterns and participation in overcoming them.
Once a person has been diagnosed with alcohol dependence, treatment can begin only if the alcoholic
acknowledges that a problem exists and accepts to stop drinking. He or she needs to understand that alcoholism is curable and must be
motivated to change.
It is critical for family and friends to learn about alcoholism and to motivate a loved one to look for help. Support
groups may help alcoholics lead a normal and productive life.
Support groups will be recommended to help the person stay in control of their disease.
